BIKE AFRICA is assisting Keep the Dream 196, an organisation supporting some of the 1.5 million children orphaned as a result of HIV in South Africa.

Keep the Dream 196 is a community-based charity using mentoring programs to provide better care for orphans and vulnerable children. Mentors guide children in making decisions that build a brighter future. Through teaching independence, responsibility and resilience, this program advances employment generation, poverty reduction and social integration at a grassroots level.

THE JOURNEY

The cycling adventure began January 15, 2012.

More than 50 members of Kampala Cycling escorted Mark and Katie Dee on Day One of the ride. Kampala Cycling use the power of sport to effect behavioural change and enhance healthy community development in Uganda.

BIKE AFRICA and Kampala Cycling are making a gesture of solidarity for the children of Keep the Dream 196 and all children who need support to achieve their dreams.

What followed was an amazing journey through the heart of Africa. 10 nations, 8000 kilometres, 2 species.

Katie Dee, the cycling koala, pedalled 8 178 kilometres to support African kids.

Once marsupial; now international hero:

RACE ACROSS AFRICA

Over one thousand adventurous souls from Australia embarked on an epic, 8000 kilometre, virtual journey through Africa to demonstrate solidarity for children who struggle to achieve their dreams. Teams accumulated kilometres by cycling, running or walking to match the distance cycled by Mark McNamara and Katie Dee, the cycling koala.

RACE ACROSS AFRICA team ‘locations’ are plotted along the BIKE AFRICA route map according to cumulative distances achieved.

Participants worked together to achieve an ambitious goal and benefitted from the physical exercise involved in completing the task.

Rafiki Jean De Dieu Uwimana, a champion cyclist from Team Rwanda, spoke of his involvement in cycling and gave his encouragement to RACE ACROSS AFRICA participants. His message can be viewed below.
